UNPLEASANT EXPERIENCE OF A v STEiMER. ! [Pkr Press Association.] j A AUCKLAND, May 29. Tlie steamer Herald" has arrived, at One- ' hunga from Greymouth. While crossing the Manukau Bar tremendous seas smashed the rails and' wheel-house, tore up the gratings and completely destroyed tbe meat-bouse. Oil bags had to be used before the vessel could get into harbour. An accident to the steering gear retarded the steamer's progress up the harbour, ancl die ran on to a mud bank and stuck for two hours. ;i The Ngapuhi was unable to leave, for ! New Plymouth yesterday afternoon owing to the dangerous condition of the bar. Later. The damage to the Herald is comparatively slight, notwithstanding the 'heavy seas that washed her decks.
