Pekin presents a stramge sight, owing to the preparation for the return of the Court. Palaces, pagodas and temples are gauqUly painted amd gilded. The walls of the Imperial City are vivid with crimson, and i wooden, towers have (replaced the destroyed . stone towers at the Chenmer Gate, with painted representations of cannon. The Foreign Ministers have ' refused the 1 use of two buildings allotted to the Legations to -view the pagean^, but will allow their families to occupy them. iMany people , declare that ib is a mistake for the Powers to be represented, as this would constitute , an act of homage to the Court. One thousand well-armed Shantung soldiers have arrived at Pekin. The Legation guards are confined to their barracks.
