CAN THE SEOE FISHED OUT?
; A NEVER FAILING HARVEST. Mr H. B. Marston answers this question in the "Nineteenth Century" in the negative. Every second) hi every month, in every day of the year, more fish are produced in the sea than all humanity combined could d*vour in the same time. Dr Hjorb has proved that .there are great quantities of edlible fish in tlhe ocean- depths where it waß believed 'that no fish couldi live. A year ago it was thought impossible that the young of cod t haddock, coal-fish, and whiting could! live out in the open sea, but Dr Hjort has demolished! this theoryand proved tJhiat ithere an© many million • times more young fish in the «ea tlhan we had any idlea of. In his article 'he mentions two curious facts— one, that within ; tlie last year or two a countless army of octopuses has advanced -along the northern' coast of France and' has absolutely destroyed—for a time, at least — ifo& crab and lobster fisheries. . The ofcber fact he mentions is that the annual harvest of tlhe North Sea iri fish is estimated at eight millions sterling, of w^ioh more than one-half is reaped by Englishmen. .
