TIMARU NOTES.
(By SPECTATOR.) The South Canterbury Protestant Band played out last Sundn.y afternoon at Caroline Bay, to a. large gathering of tie publit;. The Band was mot well balanced at all. There seemed to be no inner parta goiug. The music was mob of the highest class, but was played fairly well. The basses were fair, rather good tone from *he E flat, and the euphonium player was very good on solos, but on accompaniments indifferent. The tenors had not much to do, nor had 1 the bai'itones. The soprano player was very brassy, and does not seem to think about the other part of the band at all. I would advise him to go in for practising more softly, ; hs can always be heard when he is wanted. The cornts, will, perhaps, improve." Taken as a whole, the young bandmaster, Mr J. Chiles, who was making his first appearance, deserves great praise.
