JUBILEE MEMORIAL.

A meeting of the Jubilee Memorial and Finance Committee was held in the City Council Chambers yesterday afternoon; r lent— The Mayor (chairman), Messrs H. Beswick, F. Graham, W. W. Collins, M.H.R., H. B. Sorensen, Dr Levinge, H. F. Wigram, J. B. Fisher and R. M'Donald. . The Chairman reported that the total amount in hand was £1032 14s, of which the sum of £168 14s had been subscribed since last meeting. The Secretary had visited most of the large factories around Christchurch with very satisfactory results, only one manufacturer refusing to allow lists to be placed in ihis premises. A further appeal had been sent to the Mayors and chairmen of local bodies. With regard to the site for the statue, six places had been selected as suitable. In three of these, Cathedral Square, the cabstands at the Grain Agency Buildings, and Market Square, the City Council would not allow the statue to be placed, as the comTenience of the public would suffer, roe City Council had passed a Tesblution in far your of placing the statue in Market Square, but would not object to Latimer Square, the old Council yard, or the Domain being used. The City Council was albo willing that the name of the Market Square should be changed to Victoria Square. Mr Beawick then moved that the committee should recommend the south-western aide of Market Square as the most suitable site. Mr Sorensen seconded the motion. Dr Levinge said he was in favour ol * Latimer Square. The, committee should bear in mind the possibilities of the future. Chrirtchurch was expanding very rapidly In an easterly direction, and the. streets vast Latimer Square would undoubtedly beSome great thoroughfares. Then the surroundings of Latimer Square were all wet <■ JyT while the south side of the -Market Square was not very attractive. Mr Fisher thought Market Square would be the best place, especially as the name would be changed to Victoria Square Then the Victoria statue would be in Victoria Square with Victoria Street running also preferred Market Square, and thought the general meeting would select that eite in any case. . , ' The resolution was then put and carriea. The Chairman said, in answer .~o ouestions, that he thought > the^tatue Should be placed facing the Supreme Court: The duty of the committee was only to recommend a site, but all four wtm. Market Square, Latimer Square, the .Do, main and the old Council yard, would be brought before the general meeting for the settlement. Under these ckcumstances, some system of voting would flare to bo arranged. \ Mr Wigram suggested that voting papers should 'be distributed to those present at the meeting with the names of the four sates, and that the voters should be asked to place the numbers one, two and three agaist three of the names, in the order of tfoeir preference. Any other sites that might be suggested at the meeting could be added. He thought that Market Square would be chosen on a show of hands, but it might be neces-, siry to have a ballot. The committee decided to adopt Mr Wigram's suggestion. Some discussion took place with regard to the design of the four panels to be placed around the pedestal of the statue. Suggested designs had been forwarded to Mr Williamson, at London* in whose hands the work had been placed. One panel was to be left blank, to. receive the names of those Canterbury men w!ho had died in South Africa. The committee seemed to be of the opinion that the panel commemorating the old colonists should have ' the names of the passengers by the first lour ships on it, but it was recognised that it would be impossible. Even if all the names could be placed on the panel, there were many who came out previously in other vessels. Dr Levinge moved, and Mr Wigram seconded, that the question of .the designs should be left in the hands of Mr Williamaon, to confer with the Mayor, who expects to be in London early in June. The motion was carried. The Mayor pointed out that it would be necessary to appoint a new Chairman, as he would be away before the next meeting. Mr Wigram was unanimously elected, and th« meeting then terminated.
