SPEECH AT mVERCARGILL. [Per Press Association.] INVERCARGILL, Jan. 10. The Hon W. Hat-Jones was entertained at a "social" last evening. All the anembers for the district ttere- present, and) also Mr M'Lachlan, M.H^ll., and' Mr Arnold; M.H.R. The Minister expressed surprise at the progress made during the past three years. Referring to the Lake district, he said that a better olass c£ boats was required on Lake Wakatipu, and the cost oS travelling ought to be reduced £v it* to bring health resorts within reach of persons of. moderate means. Regarding the Hon J. G. Ward's scheime of railway commiunioation with Lake MaiHupcuri, he said he had no idea that the land in that darectian. was of such good quality. He would ascertain the cost of a narrow gauge and ordinary gauge railway to the lakes ,t»th by way of Lumsden and Otantaia, and it would be for Parliament to consider whether c<ne of these Mnes would be carried out. Re did' not know of a town in the whole colony that had tv greater future before it than Invercargill. To-day the Minister received) several deputations on local matters.
