CHRISTCHURCH. Monday, Oct. 89. {Before Mr G. Forrester, J.P., and Mr J. M. Douglas, J.P.) Drunkenness. — One male first offender ■was -fined 10s. A second, who had been locked up since Saturday night, was convicted and discharged. — Annie Fraser was sentenced to fourteen days' imprisonment. . DisoKDEELY Conduct. — Neil Ewen Smith "was charged with violent, quarrelsome and disorderly conduct at the Star Hotel on Oct. 27, and also with refusing to quit the licensed premises when ordered to [do so. He was also charged wibh having assaulted Peter John Kelly and Constable Ryan. Mr Oassidy. appeared for accused. The case was remanded until to-morrow, to come before the Stipendiary Magistrate. Prohibition Order.— A sorn applied for a prohibition order against his father. The latter was very d«af, but when a constable shouted, " Have you any objection to your drink being stopped," he replied that he had, most- decidedly, ";A : 8 Mere were no convictions' against defendant, and as an order would have: the effect of stopping defendant's old age pension, the Bench" refused tlie application". Alleged Assault and Robbery. ; — George Hunter and Peter M'Ginn, on remand, were charged with having, on Oct. 20, assaulted Thomas Barron and robbed him for 7s 6d and' a pipe, valued Is. Mr Hoban appeared for the accused. Thonras Barron stated, that he had met the two accused near Churchill Street. Hunter had asl^ed him for a match, and when he offered it seized him by the throat and flung !hini to the ground. The two then cleaned out his pockets and ran away. Cross-examined by Mr Hoban, he got rather mixed, aftd contradicted himself several times. He denied, however,- having had. more than two drinks on the night in Question. Joseph Murphy and David Cotton gave evidenoe to the effect that they saw the two accused going dpwji the street after Barron, iheard a cry,, and a few minutes later met Barron covered with dust, who stated that lie had been robbed. Detective Hill said that when Barron came to the station after being robbed, he was quite sober. When jurejsted, ttt different times, the two accused had made statements which did not agree. Mark Hawken, judgment was given, for the plaintiff for 10s 9d, and in the case Mark Hawken, v. Robert Gibb, 'judgment was given for the plaintiff for. £11 18s 2d.— N. L. Baird claimed £42 7s from B. P. Ginders for painting scenerjv Mi', Smithson. appeared for tlie plain tiff,' and 1 ' Mr . Kirk f dji the defendant. The scenery had been pairited for the production of "The Shaughraun" by the Oarrick Club, of which the defandant was the treasurer, and there had betfn. no distinot agreement between the parties. Evidence given for, the plaintiff showed that the scenery had been painted properly and used in the performance. The defendant stated that there had been really no Garrick Olub. The club was to have been formed haH the initial performance been a success. He had figured as treasurer on the bills, but lrndi tad no official position. D. Ryan and J.i Sparks failed to throw any further light upon the matter, and Mr Beetham' gave judgment for the plaintiff for £37 3s.
