WELLINGTON STREETS.

[Per Press Association.] .. WELLINGTON, Sept. 22. For some time past there has be%n a difficulty in Wellington over the control of streets, either owned entirely by the Government or the ownership of which is in dispute. Some of these streets, a-ve in a, bad condition, and one as a constant source of complaint. But no one will take the responsibility for it. The City Council has discovered a clause in the Public Works Act Amendment Bill, allowing the Governor to proclaim any street constructed by the Government to be under borough control. Regarding this as an effort by a sidewind to hand over the Government's unformed streets to the city, the Council has asked the city members to get a claus'e inserted insisting on the streets .handed over being properly metalled first. As throwing some light on the perpetual complaints about the rough state of Wellington streets, the City Engineer has informed .the Council that metal cost 11s per yard against 4s 3d in Christchuroh, and that used in the latter town was of better quality. He mentioned that every effort bad been made to find good metal near Wellington without success. He was now about to visit Nelson and Motueka, where he had heard a good supply could be procured. It was stated that stone could not be imported from Christchurch because the freight was too high.
