AUCKLAND NEWS.
[Per' Press Association.] AUCKLAND, Sept. 19. The local branch of the. Shipmasters' Association discussed the proposed appointment: of the Chief inspector of Machinery (Mr .Duncan) to the secretaryship of the Marine Department. It was unanimously resolved to write to the bead office ill Wellington protesting in the strongest manner against the proposed appointment, adding that if the Government d?ems it expedient to make any alteration in the direction indicated ,an impartial person possessing a thorough ; knowledge of nautical matters should be appointed.
