ATHLETICS.
i - — • . CANTERBURY ATHLETIC AND' | . CYCLING .CLUB. ! A- meeting of the newly-formed Ch-rist- ' ehurch Mercantile Athletic Association was held in the Clarendon Hotel last evening. An apology for absence was received from Mr .J.- R. Triggs, the president, and MvE, C. Brown, vice president, occupied the chair: Mr Good said that the object of the meeting was to consider the advisability of taking in a number of cycling members, and to broaden the constitution of the club. The Pioneer Club had taken a step -which was not one of progress, and in consequence a large number of its members had decided co leave. A new cycling club had been spoken , cf, but it had been suggested tliat before ■ forming one it would be well to meet the' I Mercantile Athletic Club. Mr Good said he thought it would be a veiy wise step for j the Mercantile Club to join hands with these j cyclists. It was questionable whether, without the assistance of these outsiders, J the club would be able to have the successful operations which had been intended. It was suggested that the club should be open to both amateur and cash cyidists and athletes. He was strongly convinced that cash running should be catered fdr, as there was a large- class of athletes in 1 Christchurch, desirable in every way as members, who followed it up. In their seasons, hockey, cricket and football should' be catered for. A new club here, to be a success,, would have to' be run. on up-to-date and progressive lines. The social aspect must be thoroughly studied. In the past, athletic members had been entirely ignored in this respect. He was confident that if the constitution of the club was broadened, forty new members would join in a fortnight. Mr Kesteven said that he thought that a club formed on the lines suggested would prove very successful. Some discussion took place on the alteration of rules. Mr Montagu moved, and Mr Good seconded, that the Mercantile Athletic _&isociation should disband, with a view to forming a more comprehensive club. The motion was carried unanimously, as was also- one .moved by Mr M'Kechnie, and seconded by Mr H. Wilkinson, that the new club should be named tlie Canterbury Athletic and Cvcling Club. ' "Mr F. D. Kesteven was appointed [honorary secretary. The following Provisional Committee ' was appointed td - elkraw up rules to be submitted to- a general meeting, to be held ©n Wednesday next:— Messrs G. E. Gbnd, H Thompson, F. M'Kechnie, G. Biltcliff, Berrv, P. Hallenstein, Montagu, J. Best, Waldon, H. Wilkinson and D. Sutherland. Thirty-five members were elected in tlie room. ■
