(By TOM-TOM, Christchurch.) ." Music is the poor man's Parnassus." . . — Emerson. DRUIDS' GALA. The band contests in connection •with the .nnmuil gala of the Melbpurne Druids tonic place on Easter Monday. For the drill contest eight bands competed. Points were awarded for general appearance, dressing, correct intervals, cleanliness of instruments and accoutrements, wheeling and time in marching. The following is the result :— St Joseph's, Lnunceston (Bandmaster E. T. Lithgow), 133 points .... I S.A. Locomotive (Bandmaster C. Allison), 132 points ... . . .2 Lnunceston City (Bandmaster J. Edwards), . 126 points . . . . . . . 3 i'H c,'e ,' othor competitors were : —Melbourne Brass Band, 123 points ; fcagiehawk Bond, 123 points ; Ncwtown (Sydney) Band, 121 points: ' Lord ' Nelson " Minem' Band, St Aniaticl, US points; .Newcastle (N-S/W.^Band, 105 points--11l the evening the Town Hall was not sufficiently . capacious to hold the numbers of people who wished to attend the band contest , in that building. Some time before proceedings commenced the doors were closed by orders of the police.
