ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.

[Pee. Pkkss Association.] AUCKLAND, April 21. At the inquest on Winnie Andrews, aged eighteen, found dead at Brick Bay, the jury brought in the following verdict: — "That deceased died from taking an overdose of laudanum to ease her pain, not apprehending the fatal effect of so large a dose." The jury condoled with the parents. DUNEDIN, April 21. The TJnion Company is advised that the Kiora is unable to connect with the Australia, owing to bad weather. Mr Robert Stephenson M'Fadand, who has been manager of the Bank of New South Wales at Ashburton for some years past, shot himself at Glengarry House, Opawa, on Thursday afternoon. He had been unwell for a considerable time, and came to Christchurch for medical treatment, going to the Home on Saturday last. His mind was somewhat affected, but he appeared to be in better health on Tuesday and Wednesda}'. On Thursday afternoon he was out in the garden with Mr Harold Stewart, who, ag Mr M'Farland appeared to be intent upon gardening, went away for a few minutes. While Mr Stewart was away he heard a slight report, and, hurrying back, found his charge lying on the ground, with a wound in his left temple, and a pea-rifle, of which he had obtained possession, in his hand. The bullet lodged in the brain. The patient was attended to by Drs Hunt, De Renzi, and Stewart, but he had not regained consciousness at a late hour last night, and there was little hope of his recovery. On Thursday afternoon a horse harnessed to a dray, owned by Mr J. Connely, farmer, of the Wheateheaf, bolted from the front of Treisaven's corn store, in Market Square. The horse first made for Colombo Street, but turned back, and, crossing the cab-stand, jumped the chain fence surrounding the reserve. The dray came in contact with one of the iron posts and the horse was thus held until its driver regained control of it. The fence was damaged, but the horse and vehicle escaped without injury, while the driver, who fell from the dray when the horse made off, was also uninjured.
