BAPTIST CHINESE MISSION.

While laying the foundation-stone of the Baptist Chinese Mission Hall last night, Mr G. J. Smith, M.H.R., said he was agreeably surprised to find that there was a building in Christchurch in which twenty-five Chinese would join together in singing one of Moody and Sankey's hymns. People might say he was inconsistent in taking part in the laying of a foundation stone dedicated to the conversion of the Chinese, seeing that in the House he had vigorously opposed their entry to the colony. But he did not see anything inconsistent in it. The Chinese amongst them had come here to stay, and he would not subscribe to any creed which opposed the teaching of the Christian doctrine to any section of the people. The Baptist Church had recognised that there was a mission to be carried out in the matter, and it was entitled to congratulation for the success which had attended its efforts.
