OBITUARY.

♦ • SISTER MARY GABRIEL. By the death of Sister Mary Gabriel, sister-assistant at Mount Magdala Asylum, which took place yesterday after a lengthened illness, the establishment loses one ; of its most devoted officers. She was born on Dec. 10, 1854, and was educated at the j Lorette Convent, Dublin. She afterwards i entered the Convent of the Good Shepherd, ' instituted for fallen women, and became a professed nun in the same congregation on May 11, 1882. In September of 1886 she arrived in New Zealand, and joined the j Mount Magdala staff, where she has re- 1 mained ever since, and has exerted great influence over the penitents of that institution. Her life was devoted to assist- 1 ing her fallen sisters, and in her good work I she was most self-sacrificing. During her } long and painful illness she was faithfully j attended to by the Rev Father Cummings, V.G., who was with her up to the last, j The office and Requiem Mass for the repose of the souLof Sister Mary Gabriel will be held at the chapel, Mount Magdala, J at 9 a.m. to-morrow.

[Per Press Association.] AUCKLAND, March 22. Mr William Bobbett, formerly well known in racing circles, died from the _ effects of a painful operation in a private hospital. For many years he was a prominent figure on the racecourses of the North Island° having owned Telford, Libeller, Lady Korah and Patchwork. The deceased was a widower, his wife having died five' weeks ago. He leases four young children.

Public Abattoirs. —At a largely attended meeting of the master butchers of Christchurch and suburbs, in the City Hotel, last evening, it was unanimously resolved that a deputation should wait upon the Selwyn Council at its next meeting, and place before it their views upon the question of public abattoirs. A meeting of the committee of the City Council appointed to consider the question of abattoirs was held last evening, when, it is understood, it was decided to ask the butchers to appoint representatives to meet the committee and discuss the matter - ""■■'". :\
