THE TUAM STREET DRAIN.

. ♦ MEETING AT LINWOOD. A meeting of the Linwood Borough Council and ratepayers residing in Tuam Street was held at the Council Chambers last evening, for the purpose of considering the scheme prepared by the Council for the improvement of the Tuam Street drain. There was a large attendance. His "Worship tbe Mayor presided. The Chairman stated that under the preßent scheme it was proposed to construct, with the^consentof the City Council, a brick sewer 2ft 3in in the clear, the cost of which would be .£BOO. The Drainage Board was prepared to vote £270 towards the cost, which left the ratepayers .£530 to provide. The Council waß taking steps to form Tuam Street into a separate district under the Loans to Local Bodies Act, so that the amount needed could be raised by way of a loan. The estimated value of the property facing the street was .£16,000,- which would necessitate a rate, with a contribution from the funds of the borough, of five-sixteenths of a penny to meet interest and sinking fund, the loan maturing in twenty years. Councillors Board, Brunt, Marshall and Jamieson addressed the meeting, and impressed upon them the necessity of lmvinga new drain constructed. After thematterhad been discussed, the following resolution was put and carried :— " That tho scheme put forward by the Council for the improvement of the Tuam Street drain meets with the approval of this meeting, and that the Council be asked to take the necessary steps for the carrying out of the scheme." The meeting then terminated.
