Theft. —Thomps Sutton was charged with having, on or about March 9, at Christchurch, stolen from J. Snell 71bs of horsehair, valued at 7s. The accused, who pleaded not guilty, was defended by Mr Beattie. J. Snell deposed to having taken the hair produced out of a cart accused was driving. He identified the hair by the string and the manner in which it was tied up. A piece of paper (produced), bearing the signature of the yardman employed by witness, was among the hair. Two other witnesses corroborated Mr Snell's evidence. The defence was that accused was a dealer in hair, and had purchased that produced for 3s from a man who was not personally known to him. T. Fisher, called for the defence, deposed that on Saturday week he introduced accused to a man who had horse-hair to sell. ' W. Killday deposed that on Saturday week he had a dead horse to cart away. He gave accused the hair. The horse was a black one. The Bench sentenced the accused to seven days' imprisonment with hard labour. (JBefore Mr W. H. Cooper, J.P., and Mr J. Gapes, J.P.)
