MOUNT MAGDALA.
On Saturday morning, the occasion of the completion and extension of the oratory in the chapel of Mount Magdala was honoured with solemn rites. Yesterday being the feast-day of St Gabriel, the ceremony of the Stations of The Cross was duly solemnised. The ceremony itself is of very ancient origin, and from it originated the custom by which pilgrims from all -parts of the world travelled to Jerusalem to perform its rites. By virtue -of special decrees from various Popes, the power to perform the .ceremony was delegated to various members of the priesthood, and spiritual • privileges were accorded to those who travelled in the far West as well as to Eastern pilgrims. After explaining the origin of the privileges, and the rules to be observed in the ceremony, the Very Rev Eather Cummings thanked those who had contributed to the erection of the oratory, and congratulated the Sisters of the Good Shepherd on the result of their labours. The ceremony of the erection of the Stations, which was of a most impressive nature, was then performed. The Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament was given, and the singing by the children, which was especially good, brought the ceremony to an end Tho Rev Fathers Marnane, Kuault and O'Reilly (Auckland) assisted through-
