AMATEUR ATHLETICS.

The monthly meeting of the Council of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association was held at the Occidental Hotel yesterday evening; present — Mr J. F. Grierson (Canterbury, chairman), Dr Thomas (Thames), Messrs G. B. Ritchie, W. Tonks and J. Wood (A uckland), F. W. Johnston and C. Smith (Canterbury), H. Frost (Hawke's Bay), W. H. Berg (Hardware), H. S. Batchelor (Waikato), Dr Jennings (North Shore), L. W. Harley (Wellington).Apologies for absence were received from Messrs T. Skelton. F. Harley, F. Wilding and P. Selig. Mr J. F. Grierson, consul for the Association at Wauganui, wrote, approving of the manner in which the recent championship sports had been carried out there. The receipts at the gates had 'amounted to .£452 11s 6d for the two days, and the estiimited expenses to about .£250. A vote of thanks was accorded to the consul for his report. An honorarium of £5 was voted to Mr Watt, honorary secretary at the recent Wanganui meeting, and a cordial vote of thanks was passed to him for his excellent management. Seven cap 3 and badges were passed for the Wanganui meeting, but the standard for the 120 yds Hurdle Eace was not allowed, as the race was run with a strong wind. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to the Wanganui committee and officials. On a letter from Mr Speight, Auckland, being read, the Chairman and Mr L. W. Harleywere,onthe motion of Dr Jennings, appointed a sub-com-mittee to go into the question of club colours. The Nelson. Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club asked how their' running men would be affected by the club joining the League of Wheelmen. On the motion of Dr Jennings, seconded by Mr Batchelor.it was resolved — "That the honorary Secretary be instructed to write to the Nelson Club, pointing out tha± if the club affiliates itself to the New Zealand League of Wheelmen the running members will lose their privileges as members of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association by remaining members of the Nelson Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club. They are, therefore, invited to form themselves into a new club, and to apply for affiliation to the 7^e\r Zealand Amateur Athletic Association." An application from the Wanderers' Bicycle Club, Napier, asking permission to hold two running events at their spcrts under the rules of the Association, was granted, " subject to the races being advertised and run under New Zealand' Amateur Athletic Association rules, and that only competitors belonging to clubs'affiliated to • the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association can take part in them." The rules of the Canterbury Amateur Athletic Club, which had been lately revised by that body, were approved and passed. A letter from the Auckland Amateur Athletic Club, asking for a permit for events at sports on April 9, at which members of the Cash Cycling Club proposed competing, was left in the hands of the Permit Committee to act in accordance with the advice of Mr Edwards, local consul at Auckland. The following permits were granted : — Ashburton, St Patrick's Sports ; New Zealand League of Wheelmen, Dunedin meeting; Dunedin Cycling Club; Hibernian Sports Committee, Dunedin ; Jubilee Sports Committee, Dunedin ; St Patrick's Sports, Gisborne ; Wellington Cycling Club; Fire Insurance Companies' picnic, Christchurch ; Otago High School Sports, Dunedin ; and Sumner F&te Committee. A resolution, recording the deep regret felt by the ■Association atthe death of MrF. Henry, of .Ashburton, was carried Unanimously, and the meeting terminated.
