CITY COUNCIL.

"~A"n 'Ordinary meeting of the Christ- j church City Council was held yesterday evening ; present — the Mayor and Councillors Gray, Samuels, Woods, Hamilton, Morris, Stapleton, Kincaid, Sorensen, Prudhoe, Paylmg, Smith, Andrews and Appleby. iEINANOE. Items of finance were reported as follows : —Debit balance at the bank, ,£6797 5s lOd. Receipts since last, meeting — General account, .£360- 18s od; cemetery account, ,£lB 16s; suspense account, £29 18s 64; interest account, i>22 Ms 6d. Expenditure — Weneral account, 9s lid; Richmond loan account, .£67 19s 4d ; suspense account, £1 10s. The accounts were passed. CITY BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY. The honorary Secretary of the Christchurch Beautifying Society wrote thanking the Council for handing over the Mill Island to the control of the Society, and giving a list of the flowers it was intended to plant. Councillor Gray said the Society had taken a duty oSt the hands of the Council, which would probably have cost it at least <£20 or £20, and he moved that the Council should contribute .£2O to the Society. Councillor Appleby seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously,. SWANS. The Chairman of the Geraldine Acclimatisation Society wrote asking for a pair of young swans. It was resolved to reply that black swans would be available, but that the Council had no white swans to spare. YEARLY SUPPLIES. The report of the City Surveyor recommended the following tenders for yearly supplies for acceptance : — Horse-feed, Robinson Bros,; fuel, White and Co.; cement (colonial), H. B. Kirk; iron culverts, John Anderson ; hardware and oils, Aitken and ifcoberts; brushware, J. Miller. The report was adopted, and it was decided to obtain fresh tenders for imported cement. MISCELLANEOUS. The Finance Committee advised the Town Clerk to make certain objections to the values in the valuation lists, and recommended the Council to instruct its solicitors to appear ' for the Council at the Assessment Court. The report was adopted. In reply to the Mayor, Councillor Smith regretted that his absence from town for a fortnight had delayed the report on the case of Mr Skilling, who had met with an accident while in the Council's employ. The report would, however, be brought up at the next meeting of the Council. In reply to Councillor Woods, the Mayor said that on his return from the Dunedin Jubilee, he would call together the committee to consider the question of the purchase of a new Council yard. Councillor Samuels moved that the Inspector of Nuisances should be instructed to visit the fish sales every morning. He had heard many complaints of late, and thought every care should be taken with a food which was so easily vitiated as fish. Councillor Andrews seconded the motion. On the suggestion . of the- Mayor, the words "as of ten as possible" were sUbstistuted for "every morning," and the resolution as altered was carried. The Council then rose.
