BOROUGH COUNCILS.

LTTTELTON. The fortnightly meeting of th« Lyttelton Borough Council was held on Monday night; present— The Mayor (Mr A. Chalmers), and Councillors Brown, Hobden, Field, Kadcliffe, Owen, Cook, Lewin and Dalley. Correspondence was read — From Mr W. Wales, relative to the erection of stabling in Canterbury Street. The Foreman reported that the building was being put up in accordance with the by-law. From Messrs Garrick, Cowlishaw and Fisher, stating that they had been instructed by Mr H. R. Webb to agree to a connecting pipe to a sewer going through his property only on the condition that no nuisance resulted, and upon compensation being granted for the use of any land taken. The letter was received. The Finance Committee reported receipts since last meeting .£134 18s 4d, and recommended payments amounting to .£286 7s lOd. The report was adopted. The Works Committee reported that the application of Messrs Kaye and Carter for compensation for damage to their shed during the late gale had been referred to the solicitor for his opinion. Mr Nalder had advised that the Council had no power to grant the request. The terms of the lease provided that the buildings were to be taken over by the Coun* oil at valuation when the lease expired. The Committee asked for power to .take the necessary steps to have all the houses in Brenchley Road connected with the sewer just put down. The report also dealt with a complaint made by Mr C. T. Bailey relative to the extension of the sewer in Dampier's Bay, the committee being of opinion that no hardship had been occasioned. The Lighting Committee was instructed to ascertain the conditions of the present agreement with the Gas Company. It was decided to place the collection of outstanding rents in the hands of the solicitor. Messrs W. deary and C. Mazey waited on the Council and urged the necessity for a swimming bath. They had ascertained that a bath fifty yards long by twenty yards wide could be built at a cost of about .£6OO. This estimate included a pump to raise the water from the sea. A conversational discussion followed, and eventually the matter was referred to the Recreation Committee to inquire where a site could be obtained, and other details, and report at a future meeting. The meeting then terminated.

[Per Press Association.] TIMARU, March 15. The Timaru Borough Council, after three years' trial of the contract system for street cleaning, last night resolved to revert to day labour. It was resolved to repeat the request to the Fire Insurance Association for the subsidy for the Fire Brigade, not paid the last two years, and that failing a favourable reply the Council will seek to co-operate with other municipalities in a municipal insurance system.
