Mr Chamberlain, Collector of Customs, t opened an inquiry at the port to-day, [ touching the death of Captain Anderson, as the result of an accident at Cuttle Cove during the Waikare's Sounds trip. The r officers of the ship, Captain Strang and 1 Mr Cook, superintending engineer, were examined. The evidence went to show ( that the accident was entirely due to the breaking of a defective link in the hydraulic gear, which caused the crane to 1 drop and swing in-board, sweeping the deck. This fault was due to the bad quality of the iron used in the construction of the particular link, and could not have been detected. It was also shown that the ship proceeded on her voyage at the request of Captain Anderson and the injured passengers, and with the concurrence of two doctors aboard. The inquiry was adjourned till to-morrow.
