' The total rainfall for 1897 was :—Aucks la-pd 46in, Wellington 48in, Christohurcl. I 1-ih-, Dunedin 38in. At Thnaru only 12_in • were recorded, at Oamaru 14. On the west coast of the South Island, however, ' the fall ranged from 78in at Westport to ' 21 4in at Greymouth, 1 29in at Hokitika and 268in Puysegur Point. At Inglewbod, Taranaki, the fall . was J.2oin, a long way ahead of any adjacent district. y
