X/V/JLVV/ \J VJXt VV/ t/^1 VliJU* NEW BRIGHTON. The fortnightly meeting of the New Brighton Borough Council was held last night; present — The Mayor (Mr R. C. Bishop), Councillors Winny, M'lntyre, Rowe, Owles and Glanville. Correspondence was read from Mrs Annie Pyke asking tor the placing of a culvert on a road now being formed. Referred to the Works Committee. The Town Clerk reported a credit balance of .£63. The question of lighting the borough was referred to the Lighting Committee. It was resolved that permission should be granted to residents to phice seats on the beach under the supervision of the Council. It was resolved that the question of the further employment of the Council's workman should be referred to the Works Committee. Councillor Winny spoke at length on the question of planting trees on the beach. He was of opinion that the Council should take some immediate action in the matter, and that the experiment of transplanting young trees and attempting to make them grow on the beach might be tried. A general discussion on the subject took place. The meeting then terminated. ASHBURTON. A special meeting of this Council was held on Monday evening to confirm a special order regarding an agreement between the Council and the Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, disposing of a weighbridge in the store. The order was confirmed. The ordinary meeting was then held; present — The Mayor (Mr .C. Reid) and Councillors Thomas, Baker, Bird, Orr, Davis and Scaly. The Mayor reported the debit balance to be .£1636 10s 6d, and the receipts since last meeting ,£2OO 5s Id. The Paymaster-General wrote, stating that .£149 had been paid to the Council's credit at the bank, being 75 per cent of the Government subsidy. MiSutherland wrote, offering .£SO in settlement of his half-year's rent of reserve, amounting to .£75, and payment of rates. On the motion of Councillor Davis the offer was accepted. An account of .£4B foi maintenance of the traffic bridge was ordered to be paid. The engineer's report, recommended the raising of a loan to finish the footpaths and channels throughout the town, and it was resolved to go into the whole question. The Council decided not to support the forming of the Samaritan Home, Christchurch, into a separate institution. The tender of Mr John Blackler for forming the North-east Belt was accepted, subject to the approval of the Hampstead Town Board ; the amount was .£4B 13s 4d, and the highest tender was .£6O.
