SWIMMING.
A meeting of the committee of the Canterbury Amateur Swimming Club was held last evening ; present— Messrs A. G. Htmderson (who presided), W. G. Atack, S. Pentecost, F. H. Cotton, A. E. Milne and Ct. Milne (honorary secretary.) Correspondence was read— From Mr Kinsey, president of the club, and from Messrs W. G. Atack, vice-president, W. Eeece and B. Kent, offering prizes for competition at the annual sports meeting, and the committee expressed its hearty thanks to these sentlemen for their generosity. The various officers for the night carnival,. to be held at Mr Kent's bath on Friday evening, March 18, at 7.45 o'clock, were elected. It was decided to have the water heated to a temperature of 80 degrees, to enable swimmers to put up fast times. The Secretary reported that entries were coming in freely, and that they would finally close at 9 p.m. on Saturday next. The steps already taken by Messrs Atack and Milne were confirmed, and the programme as drawn up was adopted. Messrs Henderson, Cotton and the Secretary were appointed a subcommittee to make all necessary arrangements. Before the meeting closed the committee expressed its sincere sympathy with Mr T. TVauchop, captain of the Ea3t Christchurch Club, in his severe illness. At the sports to be held on Saturday, under the auspices of the Ohristchurch Club, Percy Cavill and F. Lane will try to put up a record for the fifty yards distance, which at present stands at 29sec. The other members of the Sydney team will also compete, and Percy Cavill will give an exhibition of diving and fancy swimming. The Interclub Handicap includes the best local swimmers. The Sydney men will leave on Saturday night, and it will be six years before the Australians again visit New Zealand.
