The Government has informed Mr Chamberlain that it is not favourable to the proposed: reduction of the postal rate between Great Britain and the colonies to 2d, owing to tlie loss of revenue. It. suggested that an intercolonial postal conference should discuss the question before the Imperial authorities take any action. TELEGRAPHIC INTERRUPTION. ADELAIDE, Jan. 81. By a destructive bush fire in the Renmark district, over 200 telegraph poles were burned, interfering with, the intercolonial service. BANKING RETURNS. Beceived Jon. 31, 10.40 a.m. SYDNEY, Jan. 81. ' The banking returns for the December quarter .show aggregate liabilities .£31,026,000, as compared with for the corresponding previous quarter, and assets £16,371,000 as compared with .£46,790,000. The proportion of cash to liabilities on deposits and notes stands at 3s lOd in the £, being a decrease of £d.
