SUMMER NOTES.
[From Our Correspondent.] The much discussed fireworks display has come off at last, and without doubt was a great success. The promoters, Messrs Morton, White and Eollitt, are to be congratulated on their pluck in giving such a display, and on the perfect arrangements. I understand the secretary, Mr C. Morton, made most of the arrangements, and to him the kudos is due. The plucky trio expended nearly; forty pounds, and certainly got full value for their money. They will, within a day- or two, produce a balance-sheet, so that anyone can see how the fnnds have been expended. The College Rifles are in camp on Mr Monck's property, and are in strong muster. They drill with regularity, and whilst they are here we feel quite safe from invasion. To-day they give a concert in aid of the Oxford Relief Fund, and it promises to be a great success. On their offering to do so, the Mayor took the matter up, and. although the time was short, promptly made arrangements. The Dramatic Club will give another of their pleasing performances on Tuesday next. This club is so popular, and places its pieces on the stage with such effect, that the entertainment is sure to be largely attended. Some time ago I had reason to write relative to the non-publication of a balance-sheet of an entertainment got up in aid of a certain object. I learn that some people are under the impression that it jvas the Dramatic Club I referred to. This is not the case, as the .Dramatic Club have always promptly balanced up, paid their debts, and handed over any surplus there might be. In fact, on one or more occasions they have been able to assist some good object to the extent of .£9. I think it only right to deny the rumour, as there is no doubt it was partly caused by me in drawing attention to the defunct club's method of conducting its business. I understand there will be a meeting of those interested in having a gala day for Sumner, and some very novel items have been suggested for the day's entertainment. Wo have plenty of people in Sumner who can carry out a capital day's sports, but they lack the energy for doing so. In connection with this matter I hope all will pull together, and that the gala day will •be as successful, and as much appreciated, as the fireworks were.
