.Magistrate's Cottbt. — There was no business transacted at the Magistrate's Courb this morning. Bpwling. — A four-rink match between the Christohurch and Canterbury Bowling Clubs will take place on the green of the former on Saturday next. , SaliE op Goods. — Messrs Ayers, Beauchamp and Co. announce an unreserved sale of miscellaneous goods, to be held in their rooms, Cashel Street, at 1 p.m. on Monday. Pebsonaii. — Mr G. Hogben, head master of the Timaru High School, was . a passenger by the express . thi3 morning for Timaru. — Mr G. Hudson, assistant general manager of railways, arrived from Wellington by the s.s. Flora, and left for Dunedin by the express, accompanied by Mr Gaw, district traffic manager. The Governor. — His Excellency the Governor, accompanied by Captain Alexander, private secretary, left by the 8.15 a.m. train to-day for Little River, en route for Akaroa, where he will remain until Monday. His Excellency took a waggonette and pair of horses with him, for driving from Little River to Akaroa. Bishop Cowtb. — The Most Rev the Bishop of Auckland, Primate of the Anglican Church of New Zealand, with Mrs Cowie and the Rev B. Cowie, chaplain and secretary, arrived from Anckland this morning and are staying with the Eight Rev the Bishop of Christchuroh at Bishop's Court. Bishop Cowie will preach in the Cathedral tomorrow morning. ' Sunday Services. — At the Trinity Congregational Church the Rev Sidney J. Baker will -condnct both the morning and the evening service. His subject in the evening will be " God in the Desert." At the Oxford Terrace Baptist Church the Rev W. L. Salter will be the pieacher both in the morning and the evening. The Salvation Army will hold special services of song to-morrow in the Victoria Street Barracks, and the proceeds will be devoted to the Bush Fires Relief Fund. In the Druids* Hall, to-morrow night, the lecture Eubject will be "The Eestoration of Israel." ; Rifle Matches. — The following letter has been received by the captain of the Christchurch Working Men's Club Rifle Class, in response to a challenge sent by them to a team from H.M.S. Mildura : — " H.M.S. Mildura, Jan. 25, 1898. I much regret I am unable to give my sanction to the match you propose, in view of the following order from hi 3 Excellency, the Commander in chief: 'No officers or men belonging to Her Majesty's ships on the station are to to be allowed ta engage in rifle matches in New Zealand with persons not belonging to the squadron, Mr Whitney, manager of the Colonial Ammunition Company, having charged the seamen and marines of the squadron with giving away and selling to volunteers rifle ammunition.' — H. Lean, japtain and senior officer, New Zealand Division." The Lyceum. — At the Lyceum tomorrow evening Mr W. W. Collins will lecture on " The Pioneers of Evolution." Cantata. — At the Oddfellows' HalL i Kaiapoi, on Thursday evening, the cantata, Lily Bell, was repeated. There was only a moderate attendance. St Albans School Committee. — Miss Proudd has been recommended by this committee for appobatment as infant mistress, subject to the Board's approval. Building and Loan Society. — The fifteenth annual meeting of the Northern Building and Loan Society was held at Kaiapoi last night, when there was a fair attendance. Science and Art. — Entries for the examinations in connection with the Kensington Science and Art Department of London" will close on Feb. 9, with Mr H. C.Lane, Secretary of the North Canterbury Board of Education. Christ's College Old Boys' AssociaTION A special general meeting of the Christ's College Old Boys' Association will be held in the College schoolroom at 8 p m on Tuesday next to elect a president in piae'e of the late Mr A. M. OUivier. The Enoineebs' Look-out.~A " rally " meeting will be held in Cathedral Square at eioht o'clock this evening, when addresses will be given in connection with the lock-out of the engineers at Home. The Sydenham Brass Band will be in attendance. St Andrew's Caledonian Society, ; Kaiafoi.— At a meeting on Thureuiy evening, tbe committee appointed to draft a programme for the Easter Monday sports prepared one with thirtyBix itwns, which will be submitted ior approval nb the next monthly meeting of members. Presentation.— At a gathering of the Christchurch Liedertafel last evening, Mr J. P. Newman, who is about to leave tor Invercargill, was presented by his iellowmemberawith a silver matchbox, as a token of their esteem. The presentation was made by Mr W. Devenish-Meares, and Idr Newman suitably responded.

St Albans School. — A special meeting of the St Albans School Committee was held last night, Mr A'Court in the chair. AH the members were present. It was unanimously resolved to nominate Messrs Saanders and Cresswell for seats on the Board of Education; also to recommend Miss Douds for appointment as infant mistress. Mb BenTiiiLett.— The farewell "social" to be given to Mr Ben Tillett previous to his departure for London will take place in the Choral Hall on Tuesday evening, instead of on Monday evening as previously arranged. Any surplus from the "social" will go towards the funds for the engineers who are locked out in England. Musical Union. — Work will be resumed after the holidays, next week. The orchestra will begin on Monday and vocalists on Tuesday. The friends of Mr F. M. Wallace will be pleased to learn that he has returned from his holiday thoroughly set up in health. As already reported, Alfred Hill's Hiiwmoa will be the first work of the new season. San Fbanoisco Mail. — The Moana, with the San Francisco mail, arrived at Auckland yesterday. It has been arranged that the Kanieri shall bring the southern portions cf the mail from Manukau to New Plymouth, whence they will be taken to Wellington by train, reaching there tonight. The Corinna, leaving Wellington at eleven o'clock to-night, will bring the South Island bags to Lyttelton. Customs Duties. — The following statement shows the amount of Customs duties collected at the Port of Lyttelton during the week which ended yesterday, Jan. 28:— Sprits, &c, .£953 16s 2d; cigars, .£BB 5s 9d; tobacco, £874 11s 3d; wine, £176 8s 2d; ale and beer, £17 16s ; tea. £230 16s ; coffee, &c, £10 7s ; sugar, £423 14s Id, weight, £380 18s 9d; ad valorem, £920 12s 6d ; other duties, £170 13s 3d. Total, £4247 18s lid. Trades Picnic. — The adjourned meeting of plumbers., gasfitters and tinsmiths was held in the Foresters' Hall last evening, and was largely attended. Mr Shaw Billcliff presided. The Canvassing Committee presented its report, which was considered highly satisfactory; donations of trophies had been offered by several firms. It was unanimously decided to hold the picnic at Tai Tapu on Feb. 10. Several tenders were received for a brass band, and a ballot resulted in the Sta«imore Band being engaged for the occasion. Co-operative Settlements. — The Progressive Liberal Association has arranged a conference, to be composed of delegates from the various Labour Unions and Political Associations, to be held on Friday evening next, for the purpose of discussing a ciuple of proposals for the establishment of co-operative settlements. One of the schemes has been formulated by the Hon W. M. Bolt, and the other by Mr E. J. Le Grove, and both provide that self-sup-porting communities shall be established by the Government, principally to absorb the unemployed labour of the colony. The conference will consider both proposals, and if it is thought that either is practicable, steps will be taken towards getting it established.
