THE INQUEST.

. AUCKLAND, Dec. 31. At the inquest on the girl M'Callum, Dr Bakewell was recalled, and gave evidence to the effect that the operation performed by Dr Purchase when called in consultation shortly before the woman's death, could not have caused a wound, and could not in any way have hastened the death of the deceased. This concluded the evidence. Inspector Hiekson said that he had desired by his questions to show that the police were not to blame for the escape of the person implicated. He referred to the oversight of the Justice of the Peace who took the deceased's depositions in not sending them to the police earlier. The inquiry was adjourned till two o'clock, when the Coroner will sum up.
