JOURNALISTS' INSTITUTE.
The annual meeting of the Christchurch branch of the New Zealand Institute of Journalists was held yesterday afternoon at the Clarendon Hotel. Mr S. Saunders, the chairman, presided, and . there was a fairly good attendance of members. The committee, in its annual report, stated the steps which had been taken in order to get the Institute placed on a more satisfactory footing. The branch possessed twenty financial members and one associate, and the credit balance was .£ll 4s 2d, and the liabilities were about .£4. On the motion of the Chairman, seconded by Mr G. Capper, the report and balance-sheet were received and adopted. It was decided that the branch should again protest against the continued inaction of the Council in Wellington, and intimate that unless some definite reply was received within three months to the branch's communications, it would hold. itself free to combine with other branches in introducing such reorganisation as might be deemed advisable. It was also decided tliat with a view to reviving interest in the Institute, it was advisable to have the Council meetings and the annual meeting of the Institute held in.rotatipu at. Auek-r land, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin, and the branch delegates Avere instructed to support such a change. The election of officers for the ensuing 1 year resulted as under: — Chairman, Mr G. Capper; honorary secretary, Mr G.\.B. Allen ; honorary treasurer, Mr W. G. Atack; committee, Messrs W. H. Triggs, H. M. Beeves, S. Saunders, J. L. Kelly, J. Plunket and W. H. Graham ; representatives on the Council, Messrs J. L. Kelly and. ; W. H. Triggs ; delegates to the annual meeting of the Institute, Messrs G. E. Allen, and W. G. Atack; auditor. Mr G. Mime. On. the motion of Mr Milne the committee were recommended to take into consideration the question of . holding a social gathering of members of the branch. An. honorarium was voted to the Secretary, Mr Allen, for his past services, and a vote of thanks to the retiring officeri closed the meeting.
