THE CRETAN CRISIS.
Mk'gLADSTONE'S OPINION. STATEMENT BY ME BALFOUR, FPeb Press Association.] LONDON, April 3. Mr Gladstone, in a letter dealing with the Cretan question, says that trie Powers are not entitled to choose a ruler for Crete, but that the Cretans are entitled to claim a ruler for themselves. In the House of Commons, Mr Balfour, replying to Mr Labouchere, Baid that the "freedom of Crete would certainly be secured, but he was unable to speak with the same confidence as to the prospects of the maintenance of the peace of Europe.
