.fl. — INTERPROVINCIAL MATCH. WELLINGTON V. CANTERBURY. This match was commenced at Lancaster Park at 11.20 this morning. Canterbury lost the toss and took the field. The weather was excellent up to about two o'clock, and the wickets promised well, but the attendance was very limited. Burton and Warren opened the batting to the bowling of Bates and Malone. Ten soon came up, but Fowke shortly afterwards smartly stumped Burton — 13 — I—4,1 — 4, and Williams came in, Warren running into doubles at once. After playing a maiden the new-comer hit Malone to tlie leg boundary and Warren, scoring 3 in the same direction, 20 appeared after twenty-five minutes' play. Warren continued aggressively, and soon brought 30 up, having scored 20 himself. A succession of singles were then noted, until Williams jumped in to Malone and drove him grandly to the off boundary, running in doubles and bringing 40 up. Seven runs later M'Murray took Bates's place at the bowling crease, and at once bowled Warren with a short-pitched breakback — 49 — 2 — 31. Holdship was next, and brought 50 up first ball by a neat single. Williams played one dangerously near to close slip, but 2 resulted, and the Wellington crack began to score freely : but with his total at 19 Fowke missed him off Majone. Sixty soon came, both men scoring steadily. Williams hit out in fine style, and a couple of fours in one over of Malone's brought 70 up and North was put on in his place. Holdship hit him hard to the off, and, Reese misfielding, 4 resulted — 80 up. The Wellington skipper followed this up in the same over with a magnificent cut to the terraces, and in M'Murray's next over he hit him twice to the leg boundary in brilliant style. At 96 D. Reese bowled instead of M'Murray, and sent down a maiden over to Williams. Holdship, though, sent the 100 in sight in the next over. Sims let one through his legs and a boundary hit to Williams was noted. The score increased very rapidly, Holdship, in particular, making boundary hits in all directions. At 121 Bates and Clark took up the bowling, and each sent down a maiden. The luncheon adjournment then intervened with Holdship 45 and Williams The following are the scores : — • WELLINGTO!-.
