CHEVIOT.
— — ♦ [From Our Correspondent.] The Eight Rev Dr Grimes, Eomau Catholic Bishop of Christchurch, paid his first visit to Cheviot on Saturday, Oct. 10. On Sunday morning the Bishop, assisted by the Eev Father Galerne, held two services in the M'Kenzie schoolroom, and mass was celebrated on each occasion. During the latter service an address of welcome to the Bishop was read by Mr S. Haughey, on behalf of the congregation, praying that his Lordship would be able to arrange to have divine services oftener at Cheviot, and to use his influence to have a church erected at the settlement. His Lordship, in reply, expressed the pleasure it gave him to come aniongst his people. He felt the great need they had for a church, and would use his best endeavours for that purpose. He hoped that in the near future they would have a resident priest at Cheviot, aud he invited those present to hold a meeting after the service in order to arrange ways and means to build a church. After the meeting it transpired that the sum of .£IOO had been promised,- and since then additional subscriptions have been received. On Monday the Bishop viewed the church land, ten acres in extent. It is thought that sufficient stone to build the church can be obtained on the section. In the evening the Bishop gave a lecture on the South Sea Islands to a large audience. The lecture was illustrated with limolight views. The foundation stone of the Town Eall at M'Kenzie has just been laid by Mr W. T. Eobinson. It is expected that the building, which is much needed, will be nearly completed by the end of this month. The Good Templars held a concert at the Wesleyan Church, M'Kenzie, last week. Mr J. Gibson occupied the chair. In addition to local assistance, Messrs J. Puschel and Favquhar Young (of Dunedin) contributed songs. The building was crowded, and the concert was considered to be the best yet held at Cheviot.
