PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS.
A meeting of the Committee of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was held yesterday afternoon at the City Council Chambers; present— Mr W. Prudhoe (in the chair), ' Mesdames Julius, Irving, Birch-Brown and Carter, Mi3ses Perrar and McClelland, Messrs J. H. Parker, H. D; Carter, M. Murphy (honorary secretary) and E. Poster (assistant secretary and inspector). The Inspector reported that the anonymous letter from Hokitika, which had been before the last meeting, complaining of to animals by a butcher there, had been forwarded to the Inspector of Police for Westland. The matter had been referred to the police to investigate, and their statements did not bear out the complaint of the writer. The Inspector also stated that he had received a letter .from Mr G. W. Russell, M.H.E., who said he would support Dr Newmans application for a subsidy for Prevention of. Cruelty Societies. It was decided to write to the .Wellington Society and also to Dr Newman with reference to the matter. - ' . , The Inspector reported that during the past month he had attended the various saleyards and the Amuri cattle fair, and had also seen the horses put on board the Fultala, bound for Calcutta: The arrangements were very suitable, and the vessel ■well adapted for * carrying horses. He had also kept a watch on tho horses carting road metal. Mr Hill, tho veterinary surgeon, had suggested that farriers should be informed that tho Society would take action against anyone who burned the lampas out of horses' mouths. During the month fifteen cautions had been administered. The report was adopted, and a resolution carried as follows : — "That the operation of burning the gums of horses for lampas is cruel and unnecessary, and that the Inspector bo instructed to take all means to put a atop to this practice." After some further discussion the meeting closed.
