TRADES AND LABOUR COUNCIL.
The monthly meeting of the Canterbnry Trades and Labour Council was held on Saturday, when all unions affiliated were represented. Correspondence was received from the' Auckland Trades Council in reference to the Eight Hours' Bill. It was resolved—"That _ this Council protests against the action of tho Legislative Council in throwing out the Eight Hours' Bill." From the Amalgamated Engineers directing the Council's attention to the Bill classifying railway employes, and urging that it was unfair in its provisions. It was resolved—"That this Council enter its protest against • the Classification Bill in the question of wages, classing of mechanics, and other matters." The Council decided to nominate Mr Cullen as labour candidate at the forthcoming elections.
