In .the Assembly >>. uyne moved that the Chairman leav- • ! j chair because of the non-presentati..;i i the promised report of the Public jrvice Commission. He indignantly xa^-d that an injustice -was inflicted on the retrenched Civil Servants by the absence of information and the masterfulness of the Commissioners. He characterised their proceedings as hole - aii'? - corner work. The Premier replied -warmly, stating that as soon aB the Board had dealt with the appeals the report would be presented. When that time came members would, perhapß, find that the report gave more information than they bargained for. The Board had carried out a great work admirably, and had saved nearly J5300,000 per annum. Many worthless officers had been got rid of. In no less than seventeen cases the Board ascertained that dismissed officers had pilfered the State funds, and other incompetents were kept in place through influential friend*. The days of old political patronage had gone, and it would be well for Civil Servants to remember that. The motion was negatived by 53 to 27.
