THE LABOUR MARKET.
The Journal of the Department of Labour, published on Not. 29, has the following remarks concerning the labour market in Canterbury : — Cbristchurch. — Building trades : Fairly bußj. Engineering trade : Busy. Boot trade : Has been very busy during tbe past month. Clothing trade: Busy ; an improvement on previous month. Eetail trade I Very good. Unskilled labour : A number of men still applying for employment. During October eleven men have been seat away to Government and private employment Bangiora— Betail trades :. In all branches business seems to be much improved; Unskilled labour:' A number of men -have found employment at shearing, but there are still a, few idle... Aahburton— Building and engineering trades, bu9y 5 the agricultural show this month has probably im-, proved- trade. .Clothing trades : Fairly busy. Eetail trades: Bather quiet. Unskilled labour : A number of men are idle. Timaru— Building trades : Fairly busy. Engineering trade:. Very dull. Boot trade : A number of tradesmen in this branch not working full time. Clothing trade : Biißy ; improved, since September; tailoring is busy,, also dressmakings' Eetail trades: Quietf except in the clothing trade. Unskilled labour: During October fifteen men have been sent to private employment. There are still a number of local men idle, besides a number travelling on the roads.
