» 1 Matobai.— At Waimate very little interest was taken in the election of Mayor. Councillor Clarke was elected by a majority of 31, the voting being— Councillor Clarke 84, Mr S. «T. Adama 53. The Weathbb in thb South. — Daring last week a good deal of snow fell on the ranges round the Mackenzie Country, and in some cases on the Pairlie side mastering for shearing included the duty _of getting sheep ont of the Bnow, which covered the range half-way down. The Dairy Company haß recently increased its capital by .£2OOO. Timabtt Presbyterian Choboh. — The annual meeting of the Timaru Presbyterian Church was held on Wednesday evening. The various reports presented were of a satisfactory character. It was stated that on the recommendation of the General Assembly, that greater efforts should be made to provide a colonially-bred Ministry, the Timaru Presbytery had undertaken to provide a scholarship of .£3O per annum for three years. The financial reports showed that the total receipts from all Bonroes had been £984,, and by economies previous deficits . had been somewhat reduced. * Naw Bbighton.— On Wednesday evening the Canterbury Engineers, who are encamped at New Brighton, 'were entertained at a card batty by the New Brighton Pishing C,lnb.;: Seven oribbage tables and three euchre tables were engaged, and the Engineers won] by four games at cribbage and by ttitee v at euchrei The Pishing Club provided refreshments*- and at the conclusion of the match Messrs W. P. Warner and J. Malcolmson made speeches on behalf of the members of the Club and the residents of New Brighton, and Captain M'Gee responded for the Engineers. Kaiapoi Working Men's Clttb.— On Wednesday evening a Morris-tube match was concluded, the prizes being a box of cigars, given by Wood, Shand and Co., and another prize given by the clab, value 10a. The first prize was won by G. C. Jowers (35), with W. Doubleday (33) and W. Turner (29) third. The three prize-winners had previously tied, each making 169 points in five shots: A euchre and cribbage tournament was also concluded on Wednesday, when the following were the winners :— Euchre— W. D. Humphreys (box cigars given by Wood, Sband and Co.), 1 ; P. East (club prize, value 10s), 2. Cribbage-— W. Barnard (box candles given by the Mayor), 1 j H. Taylor (club prize, value 10s), 2. Wombn's Chbistiah Temperance Union.— -Tester day afternoon a cake and apron fair was opened at the Union's Booms, Kaiapoi, which had been prettily decorated for the occasion. The sale was declared open by Mrs Smalley at two 6'clook, and during the afternoon a fair business was done at both Btalls. The refreshment stall wbb presided over by Misses Blackwell and Pavitt, and the cake and apron one by Mesdames Caverhill and Evane. There was a good attendance in the evening, when an entertainment was given by a number of young children, under the management of Mibs Sima. The action songs and other items give.n Bhowed that the children had been very successfully trained. The proceeds were in aid of the piano fund, and the receipts were quite up to expectations. , ■ Lawn Tennis.— On Wednesday afternoon the Rakaia Tennis Club played a match with Dunaandel at Dunsandel.
