ANTHRAX.
If the cattle disease at Ohaupo is anthrax, as Mr Gilruth says, it will be serious for the district if it spreads (writes the Hamilton correspondent of the Auckland Star). However, no further deaths have been recorded during the last few days. Unfortunately, neither Inspector Boss nor Mr Gilruth caw any of the cattle actually dying, bo they could not note the symptoms. Having noted the matter all through, I am of opinion that the frozen turnips theory of causing ind'geation and spasms is all nonsense. The cattle, when they die, putrefy in less than twelve hours, and evidently carry infection to the pigs, fifteen of which died after feeding off the carcase of one of the dead beasts. Dogs also died after eating the meat. As no cattle have died now for five days, it may turn out that the daiiger is over. To my mind neither frozen turnips nor cattle put on to heavy feed had much to do with the deaths. We will have to look further for the source of the evil.
