Wednesday, August 28. Before Mr J. 8. Woodhouse, J.P., and Mr j P. E. Wright, J.P.) Alleged Labcent.— Alexander Gillies was charged with having, on August 14, stolen an overcoat ' value JBI 10a, the property of John Chignell. Chief-De-tective Henderson conducted the prosecution, and Mr M'Connell appeared for the accused, who pleaded not gnilty. John Pepperill, a boarding-house keeper, stated that the prosecutor had Btayed at his house for some time, and left his coat in witness's care. The accused had also stayed there, and after he left the coat was missed. Detective Livingstone stated that, when he arrested the accused near Bangitata, he had the coat produced in his possession! John Ghignell stated that the coat produced was his. He had on one or two occasions lent the coat to the accused, but he had given the accused no authority to take it away. The accused gave evidence in his own behalf. The Bench sentenced the accused to one month's imprisonment with hard labour. Cases Withdrawn. — Alexander Gilließ was further charged with having, on April | 19, at Otafci, obtained from George O'Loughlin refreshment and cash to the extent of £2 by means of a valueless cheque ; and also with having, on June ! 22, at Lower Hutfc, obtained from George Nicholas board and lodging to the extent of JB3 by meanß of a valueless cheque. On the application of Chief-Detective Henderson, the cases were withdrawn.
