BOARD OP EDUCATION.

THIS DAT. An ordinary meeting of the North Canterbury Board of Education waa held this morning j present —Mr B. Westenra (chairman), arid Messrs J. Bennie, J. Munnings, J. W. Sawle, H. W. Peryman, and T. W. Adams. BUILDINGS COMMITTEE. The Buildings Cummitcee reported that the clerk of works hud been instructed to give estimates for repairs required to the master's house at E«t Oxford, and to supply a range. The application of the Sifton School Committee for compensation for improvements made by the master to his houtjo had bean refused. A number of applications for small repairs had been dealt with. It had been decided to recommend the Board, on the suggestion of the Add ing ton School Committee, respecting a strip of land 4ft wide required from the school ground to widen Jerrold Street, that no expense should be incurred, hut that the land should be given, on condition that the street was regraded, kerbed and channelled, and the present fence made good. The Mount Somera committee had been given permission to enlarge and improve the play ground. The committee could not advise the Board to treat for the purchase of the Colonists' Hall, Lyttelton, as it was understood that the School Committee objected to the building aa being unsuitable for school purposes. On the report of Air Munnings, who had visited the Bromley school in company with the Clerk of Works, ib had been decided that certain repairs should be carried out. The other matters complained of must be attended to out oE the committee's incidental fond. The report was adopted. NORM All SCHOOL. The following report of the Normal School Committee waß approved :—Examination reports were received from Mr Wood and Dr Anderson jointly on the Normal and Model Scboolß. They were j considered as being very satisfactory, and a hearty vote of thanks was passed to the teachers for their services during the year, j Reports from the heads of the several practising departments were also received. Through the long spall of bad weather the j attendance generally had fallen off, but j the average was now showing considerable ' improvement. The arrangoments made in the work of the students were working satisfactorily. Four maps for the boys' department, and one each of Australia and Nbw Zealand for the Model School were allowed. The Clerk of i Works was directed to have some minor ' repairs effected. Arrangements made for Mr Watktna to take the students in English, and Mr J. C. Adams in history, were approved. A letter was received from Mr Watkins relative to (he Canterbury College imposing a penalty on the fees of four students attending the School of Art. The Secretary was authorised to arrange with the Registrar of the College as to payment of the fees. COBBKSPONDENCB. The following correspondence was dealt with :— From Miaa Annie Colborne-Veel thanking the Board for its kind expressions of sympathy with- the family in their recent bereavement, and also for the wreath sent on the occasion of her father's funeral. Prom the Progressive Liberal Association drawing attention to the fact that; a number of school teachers were 'in tbe habit of keeping Btocks of books to sell to the children to the detriment of small shopkeepers. It was decided to reply that the matter was one for the committees to deal with, and, so far as the Board was aware, the school requisites were supplied by the teachers at a loss. A petition from the householders in the district in favour of retaining the services of the present master was held over until after the school had been examined. AFPOINTMBNTS. The following appointments were confirmed :—Lyndhurst, R. L. Satchell; Le Bon's Bay, Miss Florence Franklins ; View Hill, Miss M. Hurse ; Broad field, Mrs j H. E. Spencer, sewing mistress. The Board then went into committee upon various matters, and upon resuming, transacted some routine business and adjourned for a fortnight.
