Board of Governors.

ORDINARY MEETING. A meeting of the Board of Governors of Canterbury College washeld yesterday afternoon 5 present — MeBBrB H. B. Webb (chairman), R. Weatenra, G. G. Stead, B. W.Pereday, W. Chryatall, E. G. Wright, T. W. Stringer, J. J. Kinney, P. D. S. Neave and J. Anderson, Jan., the Bight Rev the Bishop of Christehuroh, Revs Canon Harper and Gordon Webster, Captain Garsia. Apologies were received for the absenoe of Messrs F. de C. Malet and T. S. Weston. THE LATE HB VEEL. The Chairman said that before proceeding to the formal business, he must refer to the sad event that took place at the laat meeting. He had had the pleasure of knowing Mr Veel for over twenty years, having been, acquainted with him as a member of the Board of Eduoation. He was a splendid secretary, and had all the details of his work at his fingers' •ends. He was beloved by all, and was a fond and loring parent. A few days ago, while he (Mr - Webb) was sitting 1 with Mrs Veel, a letter had been received from the junior teachers of the Normal Sohool. Those who said that the present system of education was godless, would not have said so if they could have heard the beautiful language of that letter. He moved—" That the Board of Governors desires to place on reoatdand to convey to Mrß Colborne-Yeel and the family its deep sympathy with them in the severe affliction that has lately overtaken them. By the death of tha late Mr Colborne-Yeel, the Board has lost a member devoted to the advancement of tho cause of education, and one whose zeal, ability and literary attainment will not easily be replaced. For nearly twenty yeara hii wise counsel and mature judgment were always at the disposal of the Board." The Bishop seconded the motion, which was then carried, the members standing while it was put. The Chairman read the following letter, dated August 26, whioh he had received from Miss Colborne-Yeel .* — "The Chairman of the Board of Governors. — Dear Sir,— Would you take the opportunity of this meeting to thank the Board of Governors most sincerely in our names for the kindness and consideration shown on the Bad day of our bereavement, and for the beautiful wreath Bent afterwards? The kindness of tboße who brought the terrible news will never be forgotten, and we know their 'task must hare been indeed a painful one. It is a comfort to know that my dear father died painlessly and amongßt such true friends. Accept deepest thanks for sympathy, in which my mother and sister join." It was decided to call a meeting of graduates for Saturday, Oot. 5, to receive nominations for the vacant seat on the Board. PEOFISSOES' BALABIM. Mr Stead resumed the debates that had been adjourned. He said that since last meeting he had seen Mr Chrystall, and that gentleman had agreed to withdraw his amendment if he (Mr Stead) would make an addition to his motion. His motion would then read — "That the i letters be laid on the table, and that the Registrar be instructed to inform Professors Cook and Haslam that, with every desire to meet their views, the Board regards the offer it has made of a fized salary of £900 as a very liberal one, and feels bound to adhere to its former resolution." Leave was given to Mr Chrystall to withdraw his amendment, and Mr Stead's motion, as amended, was carried. Mr Chrystall gave notice to move— "That the College and Finance Committees conjointly be requested toconsider land report npon the extra sources of ' inoome enjoyed by the several professors of the College." MISCELLANEOUS. Mr Westenra was authorised to sign | cheques and take oharge ot the key of the seal during the temporary absence of the | Chairman. j The College Committee was anthorised to appoint examiners for the Girlß' and Boya* High Schools. On the recommendation of the Museum Committee the Board agreed to a schedule of oharges for outside testing at the engineering laboratory. Certain clauses in the report with regard to the payment Of fees were postponed. The Board then rose.
