THE LABOUR MARKET.

Eeporting on the labour market in Canterbury the last issue of the Journal of the Department of Labour h&3 the following*.— Christchurch : Building trades — Quiet, owjog principally to the bad we-ither. Engineering trade — Not quite so good as last month, but there is hope of a better month io August. Baofc trade — Much the same aa last month. Some factories- are working short time. Clothing trade — Slaoker than iast rxoritb. Kotail trades— Not nearly so busy es last month, owing to the vary eovare weather. Unskilled labour— There haß been a large number of applicants, chiefly thoso who have been discharged from tho relief works. During July fourteen mßn have been sent to Government and private woiks, and 494 besides aro at present employed on the relief works. Bangiora : Trade in general — Vary dull. Unskilled labour— The Borough Council has given employment to about thirty-six men during July, but there are still a number of men unable to gee work. Ashburton: Building and engineering ttades-»Very quiet. Hoot and clothing trades — Fairly busy. Retail trades — Quiat. Unskilled labour— There aro still n, number of men idle, and at present there eeoins to be no demand. Thia is owiug, no doubt, to the bad weather. Unskilled labour — There have not been many mamad mon applicants, but a numler of eic<>!o uK'ii have/been seeking oraployment.
