TELEGRAPH WIRES,
The Telegraph Department proposes to substitute copper wires for iron wires as opportunity presents itself. A copper wire rims between Blenheim and Kaikoura and Wellington, and in time the gap will be completed and Christohurch practically reduced from a long oircuit to a short one. The iron wire in use has a resistance of sixteen units to the mile, while that of the copper wire, which is replacing it, is only five units. Copper wire is blbo lobs liable to become oxidized. The department in* tends to have a copper wire from Welling* ton to Dnnedin and also from Wellington right through to Auckland. Work npon the North Island seotions is now proceeding.
