At a meeting of the unemployed Relief Works Committee a sub-oommittee recommended tbat, as the work cannot last more than a few weeks longer, a number of the men should be paid off on Friday next. This was agreed to. At the Police Court a oharge against Weir, lioensee of the Hotel Metropole, St Clair, of permitting- drunkenness, was dismissad. The case arose out of the death, after being out all night, of the man Been, who had been supplied with drink at the hotel. The justices held that the evidence did not Bhow that the man was in suoh a state as to have been looked upon as being drunk.
