Pbohibition.— The Eev F. W. leitt, at a prohibition meeting held at Sydenham on Friday, explained the telegram which appeared in the papera about six weeks ago, concerning the passing of a prohibition law in Canada. It was, he said, suggested at the time that the Dominion Parliament had authorised the various Provincial Parliaments to pass such laws, subject to the approval of the British Privy Council. The real fact was that on June 17 the Dominion Parliament gave effect to the will of the people, as declared when the plebiscite waß taken, and passed a law prohibiting the manufacture or sale of iatoadcating liquor throughout the Dominion, exoopt for medical, manufacturing or sacramental purposes. The debate waa keen, but the decision emphatical, though the victors had agreed to suspend the execution of the legislative decision until the Imperial Privy Council had approved its legality. Mr Isitt said that thousands in New Zealand would rejoice that a population of five millions, spread over a territory nearly as large as Europe, had by its own act determined to remove from the land the chief source of poverty, crime, degradation and death. Many would, he thought, regret that our colony did not lead the way among British colonies in such a necessary reform.
