•a A meeting of tbe committee o£ the Progressive Liberal Association was hald on Thursday evening, Mr T. J. Gledhu'l in the chair. The report of the Sills Committee was adopted. It was unanimously 1 decided to eend a circular to all members of tho House oS Boprcsentittivea calling their attention to Mr Wake's pamphlet on " Police Reform." A sub-commiitee'* report on the sale of books by teachers to children, ia the varioua schools waa dis- , cnased, and it waa unanimously decided— " That tbe Board of .Education be written to, calling its' attention to the fact that several taachers supply scholars with , school books and other requisites, to the detriment of business people in the immediate vicinity o? schools." A deputation from the Prohibition League asked the aid of the Association in regard to fche clauses relating to majorities contained in the Premier's Licensing Act Amendment Bill. After the withdrawal of the deputation it was decided — " That the Premier be written to, stating that the clauses con-; tamed in the Licensing Act Amendment Bill relating to majorities neeetaary; to carry or repeal total prohibition ate illiberal, inasmuch as they do not uphold the democratic principle of bare majority rule." The Premier wrote thanking tiio Association for its expression of approval of the action of the Government in connec* tion with the Midland Railway. He also wrote promising that the payment of,' Messrs T. I. Joyat and J. A. Caygill, solicitors representing the case for the publicat the hospital inquiry, would receive the consideration of the Government. Messrs W. Hall-Jones and James Allen, M.H.R/ts, wrote concurring with the Association in a desire for police reform.
