Chamber of Commerce.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the committee of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce was held yesterday afternoon; present— Messrs G. Humphreys (president), E. Struthers, E. W. Eoper, F. Waymouth, W. Chrystall, A. Kayo and I. Gibbs. Apologies for absence were received from Meesrs W. Eeece and A. Tyree. Correspondence was received as follows :— From the Postmaster-General, in reference to the change of terminal port for the Chatham Island service, stating that no alteration would be made until the termination of the present contract in March, j 1896, when alternative tenders would be invited, with Wellington and Lyttelton as the ports of departure and arrival. FromT.H. Green and Co., on behalf of | the Canterbury bacon curers, protesting I againnt thenewtreaty with Canadaasbeipg calculated to destroy the bacon curing industry of this province. The committee | agreed with Mr Waymouth's suggestion I for all the bacon curers to hold a meeting, and send their combined views to the Colonial Treasurer direct; the committee at the same time expressing its readiness to further the object sought for. From Mr A. Joyce, Lyttelton, enclosing a paper written by him on *' Defence." It was decided that the committee could not take any action alone in this matter, aB it waß a question that concerned the community generally. From Mr Eeginald Foster, with regard to rabbit fencing in South Canterbury. It was understood that action was already being taken from the quarters interested in the question, but the Chamber would willingly give its help if called upon. From the Secretary of the Brockley Cooperative Coalmining Company in reference to extending the Glentunnel railway in order to tap certain coal deposits in the district. The matter having already been disposed of by the Government, it was decided that the committee could take no action. The ouestion of the new Customs tariff was brought up. The Colonial Treasurer having wrongly represented the Chamber's reauest with regard to delaying the operation of the tariff bo far as concerned the abolition or reduction of duties, it was resolved to send him the following telegram: — "Ecf erring 1 to your remarks in the Housa regarding new Customs tariff, j the postponement our Chamber asked for referred only to abolition or reduction of duties, as you will clearly see if you will read President's telegram and letter sent j you. It stands to reason Chamber never i wished delay operation of increased duties." The date of the annual meeting waa fixed for Friday, Auguat 30. j After Borne further routine businosa had been dealt with, the meeting terminated.
