EDUCATIONAL, INSTITUTE.

• ■ THE LATE MR COLBOENE-VEEL. A well-attended meeting of the North Canterbury Branch of the Educational Institute was held at the Normal Sohool this morning. The President, Mr T. Hughes, said that, since their last meeting, an old and esteimed fellow-officer and a former president and member o£ the Institute, had been removed by death. The late Mr Yeel was a gentleman well-known to all, and before forming any estimate of his character they must remember that he held a most diffioult position, and one surrounded by so many conflicting interests thai it was well nigh impossible for him to satisfy every one. Of hia work as secretary of the Education Board he (the president) ventured to Bay, what all would no doubt endorse, that it would be well if everyone could leave behind so fair a record as did the late Mr Yeel. By many of the young teachers he would be remembered in the dual capacity of tutor and official; by all as a cultnred and kindly gentleman, and a zealous fellow - officer. The committee of the branch had already passed a resolution expressing regret at the loss sustained by the death of the late Mr Veel, and sympathising with the members of his family. It had, however, been thought that something more should be done to perpetuate the memory of one who for so many years held a prominent position in scholastic circles, and held it bo well. It was suggested that the teachers and inspectors should combine to ereot a suitable monument over his grave. It was for the purpose of considering that matter that the meeting had been called. The Inspectors having expressed a desire to be associated with the teachers in this matter, they were represented at the meeting by Dr Anderson, who, after referring to the late Mr Yeel, outlined what he thought would be a suitable tribute to the memory of the deceased gentleman. On the motion of Dr Anderson, after discussion; it waa resolved—" That this meeting express the earnest wish that the teachers combine with the Inspectors of the North Canterbury Educational Dtstrict to erect a memorial over the grave of the late Mr Veel." v Dr Anderson and Messrs Hughes, Foster Watkint, Mayne and Hall were appointed a committee to carry out the necessary arrangements. The meeting then terminated. ,
