, JNVERCABGILL, June 12. , The Supreme Court waß engaged this morning with the private prosecution of William Lambert for perjury. The action was brought by J. J. Meikle, who was sentenced in 1887 by Judge Ward to seven years' imprisonment for Sbeep-Btealing. Lambert, an employe" of the company owning the sheep, was the principal witneaa, and swore at the trial that he saw Meikle'a son drive the sheep from the company's property to Meikle's, that Meikle was there, and that one sheep was killed by him. At the time of the conviction the law did not allow Meikle or his wife to give evidence explaining the presence of the skin on his property. Mr Solomon paid evidence would be given .that Lambert was employed by the company to . get a conviction against Mejkle, and that he had admitted, that he was promised J2EO if he succeeded. He proposed to prove> that on the day the sheep were alleged to have been stolen Meikle's son was lying in bed Buffering from a severe illness from which he afterwards died, and that Lambert .was at Mataura, drunk. The case, which is exciting much interest, will probably last two days.
