Oxford. — It is proposed by the residents of the Oxford district to tender to Constable Scott, who has been stationed for so long a time in their midst, a complimentary dinner upon his tr.ißsfer to Chrietchurch. Auction Sales.— Messrs Ayers, Beauchamp and Co. announce an auction sale of fruit for 10.30 to-morrow morning, at their rooms, and a sale of household furniture at 1.30 p.m., on premises in Hereford Street east. The Board wrote agreeing to' the promotions in the staff, as recommended by the committee, and forwarded twenty-five applications fur the position of junior assistant mistress. The committee decided to recommend Misß Maggie Campbell, afc present teaching at Eakaia, for the position. The reports upon the recently appointed pupil-teachers being satisfactory, their appointments were confirmed. Fresh tenders had been called for relaying the drain', those sent in being informal, and the tender of Mr Dykes accepted. The headmaster stated that Mr Robson had agreed to give his entertainment in aid of the school funds some time this month, and asked the assistance of the committee on that occasion, which it was agreed to accord. .' Falbe Alarm.— About 12.30 this morning an alarm was given from the box at the corner of Worcester and Baibadoea Streets. The bells were rung, and the brigade turned out with 'their plant, but no sign of fire could be seen. Personal.— The many friends of Mr H. M. Spencer, of the Bailway Department, who was recently appointed stationmaster at Mokihinui, will be sorry to hear that he is in the Westport Hospital, where his left leg haa just been amputated. Thb Pboposbd Lock Hospital.— Colonel Hume, inspector of prisons, with lm Honor Judge Ward and members of the committee of the Avon Refuge and other friends, will vieit the Addington gaol in order to examine it as to its suitability for the purpoeeß of a look hospital. Gabdgnino. — Two very seasonable articles, of interest to gardeners, appear ia the current number of the Canterbury Times— one on the culture of roses and the other on the planting of fruit trees. The usual cultural and other notss are also given, and the paper is a valuable one for horticulturists. A Disputed Bid. — At the sale of store sheep at the Addington Market yesterday, a line of 1500 wethers was knocked down at ds Id. The bid was disputed, with the result that the sheep were eventually run up to 9s 7d per head, which meant an unexpected advance to the vendor of J&7 10s on the line, he having been perfectly satisfied with the price at which the sheep were first knocked down.

ChBISTCHTJBCH HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY. — The committee of this society met last evening and decided to hold the following shows, viz. :— Bulb show, November show, rose show in December, autumn show and a chrysanthemum and fruit show. It was resolved to inform the Eose Society that the December show would be for roses only, and to request the Eose Society to submit a schedule for approval at the meeting convened for Wednesday, June 26. I St John Ambttlanch Association.— The women's first aid clasßßß which have been instructed by Drs Jennings and | Palmer will be examined as follows :— To-morrow, at 8 p.m., in the Provincial Chambers, they will be given an hour to write answers to questions, pencils and paper being provided.
